U.S. 61 shares the four lane road between Dakota and Winona with U.S. Highway 14. This stretch of highway was one of the earlier segments of U.S. 61 to be upgraded to four lanes - the construction project log shows the new road completed in 1958. The four lane road replaced the earlier two-lane concrete highway, which had been completed between 1927 and 1929. Articles in the Winona Republican Herald from the 1920's referred to this section of U.S. 61 alternately as the "Million Dollar Highway" or the "Sunset Trail". The million dollar nick name came from the great expense of the many projects required to grade and pave the road through the difficult terrain along the river bluffs.

U.S. 61 closely parallels the C.P.R. railroad. Also note the frontage road on the left. The frontage roads along the highway between Dakota and Winona were also constructed in 1958. None of them are actually old alignments.

At the bridges over Trout Creek, just south of La Moille. When this stretch of U.S. 61 was upgraded to four lanes in 1958, the bridge in use by the old two-lane road was retained as the bridge for the northbound lane (it had been constructed in 1937 to replace the original structure from 1924). It has since been replaced by the current structure (Bridge 85005). All of the other bridges between Dakota and Winona are the structures from the late 1950's four lane upgrade.
