Looking north on Arcade Street at Nebraska Avenue. Note the widening of the road ahead. This was once the southern end of the divided highway completed in 1953 from St. Paul to White Bear Lake. There was originally a raised median here, which has since been replaced by a continuous center turn lane.

Another view to the north at Iowa Avenue. North of Wheelock, Arcade Street takes on a parkway like appearance, with a marked absence of the brick commercial buildings seen further to the south. The Phalen Park golf course is on the right.

At the Maplewood city limits at Larpenteur Avenue. The center median on the left is the current beginning of the divided highway between St. Paul and White Bear Lake. The intersection with Parkway Drive is visible ahead.

About to cross over bridge 6692, which now crosses over a recreation trail constructed on a former rail grade. Bridge 6692 was constructed in 1951 to replace an earlier bridge completed in 1912.

Northbound at Roselawn Avenue. Bridge 6693, constructed in 1951 over Phalen Creek, is visible ahead.

Northbound, driving on landfill constructed in the early 1950's on what was once part of Keller Lake (the current lake is on the left, not visible). Also note the aged concrete pavement, original from 1953. The divided highway between St. Paul and White Bear Lake was constructed back when U.S. 61 was still the primary route into St. Paul from the north. It was eventually replaced by 35E, which runs parallel with U.S. 61, only a couple of miles to the west.

Northbound at the interchange with State Highway 36 in Maplewood. The cloverleaf interchange here was originally completed in 1955 as part of the four-lane expansion of Highway 36. An earlier at-grade intersection existed on this site from 1938 to 1955.

At the Highway 36 overpass and ramp to westbound 36. The bridge was constructed to replace the original in the early 1970's.
